Red Sister is definitely better classified as "Young Adult". I've read the entire series. For a quick description think a slightly darker version of Hogwart's. More outright violence, a little bit of sex, but no "difficult" concepts to deal with.

and of course the SEQUELS

I love these follow-up recommendations a LOT more than the first video. Great taste!

The Blade Itself is on my owned TBR! Adding Blackwing to my TBR now. You know I love The Poppy War! I really need to continue the series. And still haven't picked up Holy Sister! Will be reading Gideon this month I think.

The Poppy War is so amazing! I still need to read The Dragon Republic. I feel like I keep putting it off since I'm not sure I'm in the mood for grimdark fantasy. But soon hopefully! Red Sister was fantastic. I keep debating on picking up his other series. I tried Prince of Thorns years ago and really disliked it.

I mean, a list of dark books that doesn't include Abercrombie is no list at all 😂

Maybe check out A Crown for Cold Silver by Alex Marshall. It's like if Kings of the Wyld was way better and also way funnier and insanely gay. There's not a single straight character in the whole story lmao.
It's the funniest thing I've ever read too and I got Piera Forde and Ashley to read it and they concur. We all have vids about it.

So basically 25yrs ago Zosia led a rebellion against the Crimson Empire and became queen but she was constantly being undermined and she hated it so when an assassin came for her, she just gave the assassin the throne and they faked her death. All this time later she's like 50yrs old maybe and shes living in hiding in a small village with her husband when suddenly Crimson cavalry show up and massacre everyone. So Zosia wants revenge and when she hears that someone has revived the old mercenary company she created back in the day, she goes on a journey to join the Cobalt Company. Also Zosia's villains (aka her old captains) are also finding their way to the company plus there are some other characters we follow.

It's a really cool world with great world building. It's really dark yet insanely hilarious. Check it out 🙂
I think if you like the humour of Gideon the Ninth of Seven Blades in Black, Crimson Empire will be great for you. I also can't recommend the audiobooks enough. Angele Masters KILLS it and makes the story even funnier. I've gone back to the series like 4 times just to hear her funny narration

The Poppy War is one of my favorite books of all time. That passage you mentioned absolutely broke me. The way this was handled seemed so real and I agree that it didn't feel like it was there just there for shock value at all.
Red Sister is also on my top books of all time list! I can't wait to read his next book. I love that it is going to be following an ice-triber. I hope we get to know more about Abeth. The world is SO interesting and I just want to know more! I really want to read his Prince of Thorns as well because I've heard that that one actually follows a chaotic evil character and I'm really interested in seeing what that's like.
Ninth House and The Blade Itself are on my high priority TBR and I can't wait to read them! This is a fantastic list!

Yes! I love SawKill Girls!

The Bookish Mom July 31, 2020 - 12:48 pm

I love darker fantasy books. Morally grey characters tend to be my absolute favorite. I just picked up a few Joe Abercrombie books and I am excited to start the First Law series. Sawkill Girls sounds fascinating too, I will need to pick that one up. I have been wanting to pick up Ninth House for a while now. I also have Viscous, and Poppy Wars on my shelf but haven't started it yet.

I'm so interested in Red Sister. I never read fantasy but this one intrigues me. Dark books are definitely my thing. This was the video I needed 😍😍
